Short answer: we did not identify a clinical trial of the finished GumAktiv product in the PubMed searches recorded for this review. Studies of other probiotic strains provide context, not proof for this blend.
What the research tested
A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis pooled 13 randomized trials involving 321 participants. It reported a statistically significant result for gingival index (p = .04), while several other outcomes were not statistically significant. The abstract does not give effect sizes or confidence intervals, and the included products, strains, doses, and study populations varied. This pooled finding is not a trial of GumAktiv and cannot establish that GumAktiv works (2026 PubMed record).
- A 2012 placebo-controlled study enrolled 40 people with gingivitis and tested a named L. reuteri preparation for eight weeks. The abstract reports no changes in clinical variables, though some microbiological measures changed (PubMed record).
- A 2022 experimental-gingivitis study tested identified L. paracasei LPc-G110 and L. plantarum GOS42 in lozenges. There was no group difference in the primary bleeding outcome; some secondary findings differed. These are not the unspecified GumAktiv L. paracasei strain (PubMed record).
- A 2023 small trial tested S. salivarius M18. GumAktiv’s label does not identify its S. salivarius strain or CFU (PubMed record).
EFSA’s review of specified L. reuteri strains judged the evidence insufficient for a cause-and-effect relationship with maintenance of normal gum function (indexed opinion). None of those findings is a direct test of GumAktiv.
A 2026 meta-analysis pooled 13 randomized trials with 321 participants. Its abstract reports a statistically significant change in gingival-index scores (p=.04), but no statistically significant differences for plaque index, bleeding on probing, several inflammatory or bacterial measures, or gingival-crevicular-fluid volume. The abstract gives no effect sizes or confidence intervals, and interventions across the pooled trials do not establish an effect for GumAktiv’s incompletely specified blend. Statistical significance alone does not show clinical importance (Kashif et al., 2026 abstract). A separate 2026 umbrella review reports substantial variation in strains, doses, delivery forms, populations and outcomes, with many surrogate endpoints; it cautions that methodological quality and clinical applicability remain limited (full-text umbrella review).

Why extrapolation is weak
Strain, dose, delivery form, population, duration, and outcome all matter. GumAktiv’s label gives a total 3.5-billion-CFU blend at manufacture but no split among three organisms; it also lacks strain codes for several organisms. Therefore matching a species name alone cannot establish equivalence. See NIH ODS guidance on probiotics.
What would improve confidence?
A registered, adequately powered randomized controlled trial of the finished product with prespecified gum outcomes, clear strain identity and dose, transparent analysis, and independent replication would address the product-specific question. Until then, efficacy is unestablished by the evidence located here, which is different from proving no effect.
