Supplement Label Guide

FITNESSLIFEMAG · EVIDENCE-FOCUSED RESEARCH

By Biraj Health Care · Research checked October 10, 2026

Educational information for US readers. Individual treatment and supplement decisions need appropriate professional assessment.

This guide examines how to interpret quantities, ingredients and label claims.

Quick Answer

Read the complete Supplement Facts label at the intended daily serving before comparing products. Serving size, ingredient form, individual quantities and other ingredients determine what a bottle actually supplies. A Daily Value or marketing badge does not establish personal need or effectiveness. Record unknown amounts explicitly, then compare the actual preparation with relevant evidence.

Scope and audienceConsumers comparing Supplement Facts labels
Evidence-supported answerServing size and disclosed composition govern label comparison; labeling claims do not establish personal efficacy. 3, 34
Approaches discussedServing arithmetic, ingredient/form comparison, DV interpretation, claim classification
Key limitationUndisclosed blend amounts can prevent a reliable research or exposure comparison.

What does the serving size actually mean?

Find serving size, then directions. A serving can contain multiple units. Multiply per-serving amounts by the intended daily servings. Record the daily number of capsules separately so cost and exposure do not get confused.

Hypothetical example: a bottle contains 90 capsules; the label lists three capsules per serving and 300 mg of ingredient X per serving. One capsule contains 100 mg if the product is uniform. One daily serving lasts 30 days. The label does not mean 300 mg per capsule. This arithmetic example makes no claim about an appropriate dose of X.

Which ingredient form or preparation is supplied?

Write down the nutrient form, botanical part/extract or probiotic strain, where supplied. Save a label photograph. Two bottles sharing a headline ingredient may contain different preparations. A weight expressed as “herb equivalent” should not be silently treated as the amount of extract used in a trial.

For a mineral, compare the nutrient amount reported in Supplement Facts rather than a larger compound-weight statement. For a blend, note which individual quantities remain undisclosed. FDA permits certain proprietary-blend labeling, but the combined number does not tell you each component's dose. 3

What does Daily Value tell you?

Percentage Daily Value is a standardized label reference. It is not a personalized target or a scale of effectiveness. An ingredient without an established Daily Value still needs evidence and safety assessment. Nutrient recommendations differ with age and life stage. 35

What else should you read on the label?

Check other ingredients, allergens, directions, warnings and manufacturer contact. Flavor, capsule materials, sweeteners and additional ingredients can matter to an individual user. A “free from” claim should be checked against your actual dietary requirement rather than assumed from the product category.

What does the label claim establish?

FDA distinguishes nutrient-content, health and structure/function claims. A statement about supporting normal function is not equivalent to approval for treating a disease. The required disclaimer on certain supplement claims does not itself demonstrate effectiveness. 34

What if you cannot manage a large tablet?

Ask a pharmacist to check a suitable formulation, and seek assessment when difficulty swallowing affects food, liquids or saliva as well as pills.

A liquid, powder or gummy may change the number of servings, ingredient quantities, allergens or storage requirements. Compare the entire daily serving rather than substituting one unit for one tablet. Ask before crushing a tablet or opening a capsule; the actual product determines whether that change is appropriate. MedlinePlus swallowing guidance.

For fiber powders, swallowing ability and fluid instructions need separate attention: changing from a capsule to powder does not settle suitability. Use the psyllium administration guidance. If the label was reformulated, redo the dose and interaction check rather than relying on the previous bottle.

A reusable comparison sheet

Compare the same label fields at the intended daily serving. Leave an undisclosed or unverified quantity clearly marked as unknown.

Do not fill an unknown dose using a sales-page estimate. Write “not disclosed.” A useful comparison can conclude that the label is insufficient for a research match.
